Olympic Essay
In ancient Greece they held Olympic Games every four years. In A.D. 391 the Emperor Theodosius the first ended the games because he thought they were a pagan practice (about.com/Olympic Games). They were started again by Pierre baron de Coubertin, of France. The Modern Olympics were first held in Athens, Greece in 1896 (Infoplease.com/modern Olympics). The winter Olympic Games began in 1924 in Chamonix, France. The Olympics are popular because the modern Olympics have brought the whole world together and because the sports such as bobsledding have made the winter Olympics interesting.
First, the Modern Olympics have united the world’s countries. The Modern Olympics started in 1896 and were held in Athens, Greece. He hoped that it would bring the physical and mental excellence that the Ancient Olympics did and develop friendship between the countries (Scholastic.com/Modern Olympic Games). The events that were included in the first Olympics were decathlon and heptathlon. Over the years additional sports were added, some include archery, badminton, baseball and softball, boxing, bicycling, gymnastics. The athletes that were able to participate were amateur men. Later the International Olympic Committee allowed woman and professionals to participate (Scholastic.com/Modern Olympic Games). Since the beginning of the modern Olympics, they have grown both in the number of sports and in the people who have participated in them.
Next, one thing that has made the Olympics popular is the introduction of the Winter Olympics. Bobsledding is one of the Winter Olympic sports that fans enjoy the most because it is very fast and the bobsleds reach extreme speeds. Bobsledding first became popular in the 1800s in Saint Moritz, Switzerland. The first bobsled championship was in 1914 in Saint Moritz, Switzerland and was introduced to the other countries in the 1924 Winter Olympics (Think Quest.com/bobsledding). The US bobsledding team practices at 2002 Olympic Park in Park City, Utah. The record for this event all depends on the track but two of the best countries at this sport are Germany and Switzerland (ThinkQuest.com/bobsledding). One of the best U.S. competitors is Steve Langton form New York City. He has helped his team win bronze in 2011 World Championship in Konigssee, Germany and helped get gold in the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, British Colombia. What makes Steve Langton such a good competitor in this event is that he was on the Northwestern track team and which help with his speed (Temesta). Even though bobsledding originated in cold weather countries warm weather countries, like the U.S., are able to excel in this sport because leg strength and muscle strength is really what matters.
Bobsledding has become so popular that even Jamaica, a country that never sees snow, has participated in the Winter Olympics. The Olympics have become one of the most exciting competitions in the world because it brings peace to the countries and because bobsledding has made the Winter Olympics interesting.
